The History of Uxbridge

The History of Uxbridge

First settled by Quakers and British Loyalists in the early 1800s, Uxbridge is a charming, historic community with deep roots and significant historical prominence. In 1820, the Uxbridge Friends Meeting House was built, and it remains the community’s oldest building. Uxbridge was also the headquarters of the Toronto and Nipissing Railroad, officially becoming a town in 1885.

In its early days, Uxbridge was home to numerous tradespeople, and in 1872, the Uxbridge Piano and Organ Co. was founded, becoming one of the main contributors to the local economy.

Uxbridge was also once home to Lucy Maud Montgomery, the creator of Anne of Green Gables. While she and her husband lived here, she wrote about 10 or 11 of her 22 novels.

After World War Two, the town experienced significant growth that continues today, all without losing its small-town charm or its focus on heritage.
